Corsair - Qtopia RSS/Podcast Aggregator Copyright (C) 2005 Joe Rumsey (joe at rumsey dot org) This is version 0.1. No one's asked me any questions yet. So there are no frequently asked questions. Nevertheless, here are some questions that someone might ask: Q: What is Corsair? A: An RSS Aggregator, designed especially for Podcasts. Q: What's an RSS feed? A: I have typed your question into Google, and Google says, http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/aboutrss Q: What's a podcast? A: I have typed your question into Google, and Google says, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting Q: Can't you even write your own answers? A: Oh alright. RSS is mainly an alternate means of getting the contents of a blog. It's a file format that strips it down to the bare minimum and is broken up into separate entries. So it takes a news feed, or something resembling a news feed, and makes it easy for programs that want to present a list of stories to do so. It's the behind the scenes version of a lot of web sites, and public RSS feeds are available for a great number. A Podcast is really just an mp3 file that can be downloaded and listened to, but generally "Podcast" describes a show that is produced periodically and has an associated RSS feed. For example, Adam Curry has a Podcast whose normal website is: http://live.curry.com Which has an RSS feed (found by clicking the orange XML button on the site, most pages that have such a feed have an "XML" or "RSS" button somewhere) here: http://www.curry.com/xml/rss.xml The RSS version will look awful in a normal browser, but an RSS reader (such as Corsair) can format it however it likes. The actual content is mostly the same as the original web page. Furthermore, many of the entries on curry.com also have mp3 files associated with them. Corsair, and other aggregators that know about enclosures, can download those files directly without having to go through a browser. That's one example. There are many more. Q: Sounds cool. Where can I find some good podcasts? A: Some good sites are: http://www.podcastalley.com/ http://musicpodcasting.org/ Q: Why the name "Corsair?" A: I thought, "I should choose some cheesy name with "RSS" in it, so I started thinking up words with "RSS" in them. I didn't think of any, but then I thought of Corsair, which has an RS In it. "CoRSSair!" I thought, that'll work! Then I typed it once and decided it looked especially lame. But I'd spent a good 30 seconds on the problem of naming the program already, so I was understandably tired. Thus, I dropped the extra S and Corsair was born. Q: Why is this FAQ so short? A: I thought the story about CoRSSair would be funny but I didn't think anyone would find it unless it was in a FAQ. Q: That doesn't explain why the FAQ is so short, only why it exists at all. A: That's not a question.
